Kent Franklin McWhirter, known by his stage name Kent McCord, is an American actor best known for his role as Officer Jim Reed on the television series Adam-12. McCord was born Kent Franklin McWhirter in Los Angeles, California to Bert and Laura McWhirter. Under the stage name Kent McCord, he first appeared on television in 1962 in The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet.
He became a close friend of Rick Nelson and made 44 appearances on the show. He also had small roles in five Elvis Presley films and played a motorcycle messenger in McHale’s Navy in the episode “Monkey Business 007.” McCord also appeared in the first episode of Raymond Burr’s series Ironside titled “Message from Beyond” as motorcycle cop Kellogg.
He appeared three times in the first season of Jack Webb’s Dragnet in 1967. The first appearance was an extra role as a patrolman in the episode “The Big Explosion”. He was listed under his real name. In the third episode, “The Interrogation,” McCord, using his stage name, played a police officer accused of robbing a store while fresh out of the police academy working as an undercover narcotics officer. McCord appeared five more times in the second season, three times as an unnamed police officer and twice as his later Adam 12 character Jim Reed. He appeared one more time in Dragnet as Reed before the character became exclusive to Adam-12.
McCord’s big break came in 1968 when he landed a starring role alongside Martin Milner as rookie cop James A. “Jim” Reed in Adam-12, a police drama television series created by Jack Webb. The series ran on NBC from 1968 to 1975.
McCord was elected to the national board of directors of the Screen Actors Guild in 1972 and served on the board for 11 years. He was the first national vice president to serve on the national board.
