With his father, Terry, he published a father-son memoir, “The Power of Faith When Tragedy Strikes,” in 2015. After college, Norton started his own speaking company, Norton Motivation, based in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

He spent the next five days in intensive care before being transferred to a rehab clinic for the next four months, where he received almost daily occupational and physical therapy.

Two weeks after the injury, he was able to move his hands enough to operate a power steering system for an electric wheelchair. Five weeks after beginning rehab, he was able to regain some movement and feeling throughout his upper body but was still unable to move anything below his waist. In March 2011, he moved into the Ronald McDonald House in Rochester and continued rehab in the Mayo Clinic outpatient program for the next three months.

Norton moved back to Bondurant, Iowa, on May 20, 2011, and regained enough strength in his trunk and arms to operate an electrically assisted wheelchair in the fall of 2011. He returned to Luther College, where he lived with a group of former teammates in a dorm on campus. His sister Alex, a registered nurse, moved nearby to help him.

On May 24, 2015, he accepted his business management degree and was able to walk across the stage with the help of his fiancée, Emily Summers. The video of his walk has reached over 300 million views. On April 21, 2018, Norton married Emily Summers in Jupiter, Florida.
