Tookie Williams Biography.
Stanley Tookie Williams was an American gangster who co-founded and led the Crips gang Los Angeles.
Tookie Williams Was Born 29 December 1953 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
He and Raymond Washington formed an alliance in 1971 that established the Crips as Los Angeles’ first major African-American street gang. By the 1970s, Williams was the de facto leader of the Crips and the leading crime boss in South Central Los Angeles.
Williams’ activities with the Crips ended in 1979 when he was arrested for the murder of four people in two robberies.
He was sentenced to death in 1981 for the murders and spent more than two decades on death row until he was executed by lethal injection in 2005.
The high-profile trial of Williams and the extensive clemency petitions sparked a debate over the status of the death penalty in California.
In the late 1960s, juvenile crime increased in South Central as older gangs disbanded to join Black Power Movement, primarily as part of the Black Panther Party, initially to protect blacks from police brutality and corruption in the Los Angeles Police Department.
In their place, increasingly violent youth gangs formed, which Williams initially despised as predatory, but because of his viciousness and willingness to fight older youth, Williams earned the respect of many gangsters on the West Side.
These gangs were mostly small neighbourhood cliques that operated independently of each other, and leadership was not elected but emerged on its own.
At the age of fifteen, Williams was accepted into a small West Side clique after befriending a local teenager, Donald “Doc/Sweetback” Archie.
Williams soon earned the respect of the clique after beating up one of its members for insulting his mother, and Williams became the clique’s unofficial leader as his violent reputation began to spread at South Central.
Soon after the Crips were formed, other leaders were either murdered or imprisoned, and Williams was considered the de facto leader.
In 1974, Raymond Washington was arrested for 2nd-degree robbery and served five years in Tracy before being murdered shortly thereafter.
On February 23, 1973, Curtis “Buddha” Morrow was shot and killed in South Central after a minor altercation. Mac Thomas was murdered under mysterious circumstances in the mid-1970s.
